Frequently asked questions
What is GC AI?+
GC AI is the legal AI for in-house counsel, helping them work faster, accomplish more, and drive their companies' business. With industry-leading accuracy, source citations, Document Intelligence, plus security and compliance, GC AI serves 1,900+ legal teams globally. The legal teams of more than 200 public companies, 50 unicorns, and top enterprises like Hitachi, Lazard, Softbank, Racetrac, and Duolingo trust GC AI every day.
Can I try GC AI?+
Yes! Visit gc.ai/new to create an account, or take one of our legal AI classes where an expert AI lawyer will guide you through working with real legal AI for legal work.
How is GC AI different from Microsoft Copilot, Claude, or ChatGPT?+
Copilot is fine as a basic AI, and it's convenient that it has access to your email and corporate documents through Microsoft. But the reality is that Copilot is a general productivity assistant bolted onto Office. Claude is a general-purpose model that Anthropic says you can spend a lot of time tailoring to give legal answers. ChatGPT is a generalist tool for everything — great for fantasy football and crepe recipes but not great for real legal work.
GC AI is different.
GC AI is a legal AI platform made for in-house lawyers. GC AI is built for one job: in-house legal work. Cited answers you can verify, accurate answers and deep analysis, real case law lookup, contract intelligence, playbooks, and privilege security built for legal teams.
Specifically, GC AI has everything you need as a lawyer for a company:
- Citations
- Exact Quote precision
- Easy Edit — the ability to edit documents in line the way a lawyer would
- Legal research, including case law
- A legal layer that filters the research so you don't get Reddit or random non-legal citations
- Understanding of your company and its business baked in — because as in-house lawyers, the law is just part of the job
- Training and enablement so you can quickly get to higher-level use of AI beyond one-shot chats
- Protection from hallucinations
- Security, privacy, and attorney-client privilege (consumer tools don't protect privilege, which is an issue)
- A constantly improving platform that has the best of what you need
Also, we've got a team of R&D attorneys that make the accuracy and quality of GC AI answers consistently better. Almost 2,000 legal teams agree that the experience of using real legal AI eclipses that of using one that's tacked on to your general tools. But don't take their word for it — you're smart. Try GC AI yourself, and you'll find the answers and the user experience superior.
I just want a redlining tool in Word. Does GC AI do redlining? Should I use GC AI instead of, say, Spellbook or Ivo?+
Yes, GC AI does redlining in Word, and we offer a dedicated redlining product, GC AI for Word. It's well-reviewed and has all five stars in Microsoft AppSource. What's interesting, though, is that GC AI is more than a redlining tool. GC AI has a web app for research, review, and analysis. Within the GC AI web app, GC AI has Easy Edit. With Easy Edit, you can redline through the GC AI Agent and do it right through your browser in GC AI. That way, your legal work all hangs together in GC AI. You can use GC AI on the web through Easy Edit to make changes within Word documents and direct your agent to help you with legal work there.
In our experience of in-house legal work, you're doing a million things, and a million things come across your desk. We think a tool that does more than one limited thing (i.e., redlining) is the way to go.
Does GC AI have integrations with the tools I use, like my Outlook calendar, Teams, Slack, or Google Drive?+
Yes, GC AI has Agent Connectors that allow you to connect the tools you use to GC AI, and search them and pull in context that you can analyze and use in your AI.
Most legal AI and legal tech tools are hard to use. I want the easy button. Is GC AI easy?+
Yes. GC AI was made to be better than the general AI tools for in-house lawyers. We know you're busy; we are too. If you're like us, you don't have time to set up GitHub (?), write in markdown language (really? I didn't go to law school for that), or mess around with hallucinated things or risk losing your license with AI that doesn't help you check your answers. So GC AI takes care of those things. We only release products and features that we ourselves love.
GC AI users give it a 77 NPS score — that means people are more likely to recommend GC AI to a friend than they are the iPhone! Also, fun fact: most users get immediate value from GC AI over other platforms. The fastest we've gone from someone trying GC AI to paying for it is 26 minutes! I take longer to order my DoorDash than that, lol.
What kinds of legal teams use GC AI?+
In-house legal and legal-adjacent teams from every kind of company use GC AI. We have 15 restaurant company legal teams, 100+ software company legal teams, leading retailers like Brooks Running or Vuori, ecommerce companies, fintechs, manufacturing companies, venture capital funds, investment funds, city governments, amusement park legal teams, education companies — really, any kind of company lawyer can benefit from GC AI.
Can legal ops use GC AI?+
Absolutely, legal operations folks love GC AI and what it can do for their legal team. Legal ops can set up playbooks, shared skills, company profiles, and connectors once, then roll them out to the whole team. Admins can assign In-App Academy training, track progress, and manage seats. They can also use and see metrics to show ROI, who's busy, and how GC AI is being used. GC AI gives legal ops a way to drive adoption and consistency without building custom tooling or babysitting adoption of a general AI platform.
By the way, if you're a legal operations person, check out our class on rolling out legal AI. You'll meet our amazing solutions advisors Jenna Hunt and Lauren Picconi.
Does GC AI protect attorney-client privilege?+
Yes. GC AI is built specifically for legal teams with security, privacy, and privilege protection. See our Legal AI Tools and Attorney-Client Privilege: The US v Heppner Ruling for the details. Consumer AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude do not protect attorney-client privilege.
My team has Ironclad, Conga, LinkSquares, Icertis, or another contract lifecycle management (CLM) tool. Can I use GC AI?+
Of course you can! Many of the companies that we work with have contract lifecycle management tools — we help the legal team with everything around the contract, and with understanding what's going on in your contracts once they are signed. Through GC AI connectors, you can connect your Ironclad and search and query your Ironclad contracts in GC AI using GC AI contract intelligence.
Can GC AI work across my entire contract library, as opposed to just one document at a time?+
Yes. GC AI Contract Intelligence lets you connect your contracts from Google Drive, SharePoint, your CLM, or upload manually, and GC AI pulls parties, dates, clauses, and custom fields into searchable, filterable tables. You can then ask questions and get cited insights across your entire book of contracts at once. It's the same cited, legally excellent GC AI experience you get for a few documents, across many.
Can regulated industry teams like banking, insurance, or healthcare use GC AI?+
Yes! We work with legal teams at many regulated industry companies — from Lazard to Softbank to Everquote. GC AI is SOC 2 certified, has zero data retention with our model providers, and supports data governance needs. Admins at regulated institutions have requested, and we continue to build, controls like bulk file deletion, so GC AI fits into your organization's data retention policies. Check out our Trust Center at trust.gc.ai.
Who was the best Supreme Court justice?+
Oh dang, it's hard to pick a favorite. We love Learned Hand (we love a great name), but he was a Second Circuit judge, not SCOTUS. We're also partial to Thurgood Marshall.
I'm an employment or regulatory counsel. It seems like most legal AI is for commercial counsel or contracts people. Can I use GC AI?+
Yes. GC AI is great for high-stakes employment or regulatory matters. Users have used it end-to-end for reductions in force. They used GC AI to research WARN laws by state, draft strategy, build timelines, navigate statutory requirements across jurisdictions, prepare documents, and draft communications. One GC described a layoff process where GC AI helped build "everything — from strategy, planning, deadlines, persnickety statutory hurdles, documents, emails, talking points." Another employment lawyer told us that she asked her global counsel at Baker McKenzie a question about a RIF at a global office, and it turns out she liked GC AI's answer better than Baker's — and it didn't cost her $25K.
I'm an in-house litigation attorney. Can I use GC AI?+
Yes! GC AI supports case law search, and many users are replacing their LexisNexis or Westlaw subscriptions with GC AI. In-house litigators tell us they use GC AI Projects to manage entire litigation matters. They upload case documents, motions and other pleadings, as well as strategy memos, then ask GC AI to review strategy and analyze new filings without re-uploading context each time. One user described using it to review outside counsel work product against the matter strategy they'd defined, saving hours of back-and-forth.
Will GC AI actually save me time, and how do I justify the cost?+
Yes, and the math is usually easy. In-house lawyers tell us GC AI pays for itself in the first week. One deputy GC at a fintech company who inherited a two-month contract backlog on day five of a new job cleared it with GC AI running playbooks and drafting follow-ups, and pointed out that at outside-counsel rates of $475/hour, GC AI pays for itself in under ten hours of work. The fastest a user has gone from trying GC AI to buying it is 26 minutes. Wowza.
